The Astral Loyak AC is a water shoe that feels like it was designed by people who actually understand why water shoes are annoying.

That sounds like faint praise, but it really isn’t. A lot of water shoes are fine when you’re standing near the water and much less fine the moment you have to walk anywhere. They get sloppy when wet, hold too much water, let your feet slide around, collect sand, or feel like a piece of pool-deck footwear that wandered too far from its natural habitat.

The Loyak AC does a better job than most because it feels secure, comfortable, breathable, and intentionally built for wet environments without becoming useless the second you step onto pavement, gravel, sand, or a dirt path. It is not a hiking shoe, and I don’t think it should be judged as one. It’s a purpose-made water shoe for short approaches, paddling days, beach walks, boat use, fishing, travel, and general wet-foot wandering. Within that lane, it’s very good.

Astral Designs Loyak AC Pros and Cons

The Loyak AC feels like a true water shoe, not just a casual shoe that happens to tolerate getting wet.

Design and Quality

The Astral Designs Loyak AC has a clean, low-profile design that looks more like a casual sneaker than a traditional water shoe, which is one of the things I like about it. It does not have that overly rubberized, rental-kayak-bin look that makes some water shoes feel like something you only wear because the activity requires it. These look normal enough to wear before and after getting wet, and that matters if you’re traveling, walking around town, or trying to avoid packing a separate pair of shoes for every tiny use case.

The Loyak AC was built for days when they’ll be frequently in and out of the water, and at that, they excel.

Astral builds the shoe with an ultrafine ripstop mesh upper, TPU reinforcements, and water-resistant laces. The insole is a removable 45C closed-cell EVA foam, and the shoe uses Astral’s zero-drop Level Footbed with minimal arch support. Underneath, the Loyak AC has a non-marking, razor-siped G.15 Rubber outsole. The shoe weighs 190 grams, or 6.7 ounces per shoe in a men’s size 9, so it feels light without feeling flimsy.

The fit is the first thing I really appreciated. The Loyak AC holds the midfoot and heel securely while still giving the toes enough room to sit naturally. That wider toe box works well here, not because I need every shoe to be a barefoot-style shoe, but because a water shoe should be comfortable when your feet are wet, warm, and moving over uneven surfaces. A narrow or overly snug water shoe can go from “fine” to “why did I bring these?” pretty quickly.

Overall, the Loyak AC feels well thought out. The materials, fit, drainage, grip, and weight all point in the same direction. It’s not trying to be a do-everything outdoor shoe. It’s trying to be a better water shoe, and that narrower focus helps.

Wet Feet Performance

This is where the Loyak AC makes the most sense. A lot of shoes can technically get wet, but that doesn’t mean they’re pleasant to wear afterward. A regular sneaker can survive a beach day, a boat ride, or a creek crossing if it has to, but it usually turns heavy, clammy, and slow to dry. The Loyak AC feels designed around the assumption that your feet are going to get wet repeatedly and that you may still want to keep walking around afterward.

The breathable mesh allows water to flow through the shoe unhindered. Likewise, it lets air pass through just as easily.

The ultrafine ripstop mesh upper breathes well and lets air and water move through the shoe, while the drain holes at the toe and heel help water escape instead of pooling inside. I also like that the shoe dries quickly enough to feel practical. It does not have that soggy, swampy, “I guess these are wet for the rest of the day” feeling that makes regular shoes so unpleasant after water use.

On a paddle board or boat, the Loyak AC grip well when wet or dry, and there is enough comfortable midsole cushion for short stretches of standing — about as much as you would want to do on a SUP.

The shoe also does a good job of staying secure once wet, which is easy to overlook until you’ve worn a bad water shoe. When a water shoe gets sloppy, everything gets worse. Your foot shifts around, sand and grit become more noticeable, and you start walking differently to keep the shoe in place. The Loyak AC avoids most of that. It fits closely enough that I can move naturally, and the low-profile shape helps the shoe feel stable instead of bulky.

Astral lists the intended uses as SUP, training, sailing, and fishing, and that feels right to me. I’d also add beach walking, boat days, campground use, travel, and short walks around rivers, lakes, and shorelines. Astral also notes that this shoe is not recommended for heavy whitewater use, which is worth keeping in mind. It has good grip and water performance, but it is still a lightweight, minimalist water shoe, not protective whitewater armor for your feet.

Walking Performance

For walking, the Loyak AC is good within the distance and terrain range where I’d actually want to use a water shoe. I found it very comfortable for short walks of about a half mile or less on pavement, sand, gravel, and dirt paths. That covers most of the walking I expect from this type of footwear: getting from the car to the beach, walking around a marina, heading down to a boat launch, strolling through a campground, or moving between a rental house and the water.

When the tread is dry, it provides adequate grip across various surfaces, thanks in part to its decent tread depth.

The 11 mm foot-to-ground distance gives the shoe a low, flexible feel. There’s enough underfoot structure that it doesn’t feel like walking barefoot on every little pebble, but there also isn’t much cushioning or arch support. That’s not really a flaw as much as a design choice. The Loyak AC is light, flexible, and stable because it stays close to the ground. The tradeoff is that I wouldn’t choose it for long pavement walks or all-day sightseeing.

The grip is a strong point. The G.15 Rubber outsole feels secure on the short mixed-surface walks where I tested it, including pavement, sand, gravel, dirt, and wet ground. When I walked from the parking lot down an uneven dirt trail and across a rocky shoreline, I felt secure with each step, even while carrying a paddleboard under one arm and a full cooler with the other. I wouldn’t confuse the Loyak AC with a more built-up outdoor shoe, but for normal water-shoe situations, it gives me enough traction that I don’t have to think too much about every step. That’s about what I want from this category. I don’t need a water shoe to handle everything. I need it to be comfortable, stable, and grippy enough that I’m not annoyed before I even get to the water.

Across gravel, dirt, and pavement, the Astral Designs Loyak AC walks well — for short distances, that is.

Versatility

The Loyak AC is versatile in a specific way. It’s not versatile because it can replace your walking shoes, hiking shoes, sandals, and camp shoes. It’s versatile because it can handle a lot of wet-foot situations without feeling ridiculous before or after the water part of the day.

That’s where it has a real advantage over Crocs. I like Crocs for plenty of things. They’re comfortable, easy to slip on, and great around camp, in the yard, or after a long day when your feet want as little responsibility as possible. But Crocs are not especially secure, and they can feel clumsy on uneven ground, loose gravel, wet rock, or longer walks. The Loyak AC fits closer, drains more intentionally, grips better underfoot, and feels far more stable when you need to do more than shuffle around near a cooler.

Crocs are convenient. The Loyak AC is more capable.

The main limitation is that you need to actually want a water shoe. If you rarely paddle, fish, boat, camp near water, walk beaches, or travel somewhere where wet footwear makes sense, the Loyak AC may be more specialized than you need. It looks normal enough for casual use, but its best qualities are all tied to water: breathability, drainage, quick drying, secure wet fit, and grip on mixed wet and dry surfaces.

This is not a replacement for an everyday shoe, unless you live on a dock. But it’ll get you from your car to the middle of the lake without a hitch.

Should You Buy the Astral Designs Loyak AC Water Shoe?

All in all, I’d recommend the Astral Loyak AC for anyone who wants a lightweight, comfortable, quick-draining water shoe that still feels good for short walks. It fits well, dries fast, grips well for its intended use, and feels more thoughtfully designed than most shoes in this category. I wouldn’t buy it for long-distance comfort or as a replacement for a regular walking shoe, but that’s not what it’s built for.

For paddling, beach days, fishing, sailing, boat use, campground wandering, and general wet-foot travel, the Loyak AC gets the important stuff right.
